How to Boost Your Brain Health

How to Boost Your Brain Health

The most complex organ in the human body, the brain consumes about 20% of the body’s energy processing and transmitting information through billions of neurons. No one food or lifestyle change can ensure your brain health or memory, but scientists are discovering a range of lifestyle choices foods and supplements and maintaining good sleep habits can contribute to sustained cognitive functioning.

Brain Boosting Foods For Anti-Aging

Researchers and dietitians rank the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) as the best diets for anti-aging and healthy eating. Nutritionists emphasize following a balanced diet that includes a lot of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and healthy proteins and fat sources for optimal health.

brain boosting foods for brain health memoryBrain-boosting foods tend to contain one or more of the following: antioxidants, such as flavonoids or vitamin E; B vitamins; and foods with anti-inflammatory properties such as healthful fats and omega fatty acids. Inflammation plays a role in many chronic conditions. Specifically in Alzheimer’s disease, patients have a buildup of what’s called amyloid plaque, which doctors believe is what kills off brain cells.

  • As a rule, fresh foods are more nutritious than processed or prepared foods.
  • Foods containing healthful fatty acids such as avocados, olive oil or canola and fatty fish like salmon and mackerel are brain boosters. They help to improve the structure of brain cells and could reduce the risk of stroke and age-related illness.
  • Green leafy vegetables, berries, nuts, tea, coffee and broccoli are some of top brain-boosting foods. Read more on the best foods to boost your brain and memory.
  • Taking vitamins B, C, or E, beta-carotene, or magnesium may improve brain function if a person has a deficiency in any of them. Research suggests that ginseng may improve mental performance and rosemary promotes memory.
  • Sugars and saturated fats may damage brain cell structures.

All Natural Supplements for Brain Support

In addition to making dietary changes, some people take supplements to improve their brain function.  In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Good Medicine Choice Network has come up with a unique line of immune defense nutraceuticals with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties to promote healthy immune balance.  The products are designed to reduce risks from chronic inflammation and other health conditions as well as strengthen the body to better fight off viruses and infectious diseases.

Immushield Essential Oil Blend

Essential oils include biological compounds like growth factors, hormones, and neurotransmitters that are concentrated from plants. Inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell, and long-term memory. Research has shown that aromatherapy causes various actions favorable for patients such as relaxation; reductions in anxiety, depression and fatigue; and improvements in quality of life via enhanced nervous, endocrine, immune, and circulatory system function. Neuro Plus Brain & Focus

This is specially formulated Nootropic formula – designed to improve cognitive function, particularly executive functions, memory, creativity, or motivation.  Your brain is one of the most “vascular” organs in your body, consuming 10 times the oxygen compared to other tissue. Thus, your brain operates almost constantly at a high energy demand and requires an ample balance of nutrients to function optimally. Besides containing zinc, selenium, B vitamins, magnesium, and chromium, Neuro-Plus includes additional nutrients that are anti-inflammatory and fight infection, found in the following food-based ingredients: Green Tea Extract, Bacopa Extract, Bilberry Fruit Extract; Grape Seed Extract, Olive Leaf, Cinnamon Bark, and Licorice Root Extract. Finally, this blend contains L-glutamine known to improve gut health, with gut health being a major contributor to brain health.

Immune Support Mushroom Blend with Lion’s Mane

Described as a super food for immune health, Medicinal mushrooms have been traditionally used for health promotion and longevity in China and other East Asian countries for thousands of years. Medicinal mushrooms are foods that have a 2000+-year history for preventing and treating disease. All mushrooms contain beta glucans and heteropolysaccharides, which boost immune system function as evidenced by reduced biomarkers of inflammation. Mushrooms also contain lectins that are demonstrated to recognize cancer cells and prevent them from dividing. Combined, these ingredients work together to assist even the weakest immune systems by supporting overall health.

The Metabolic Role of Sleep

Sleep plays a significant role in overall health. Sleep is important in regulating your metabolism and promoting brain health.

Chronic sleep loss can contribute to health problems such as weight gain, high blood pressure, and a decrease in the immune system’s power. Sleep deprivation affects the way our bodies process carbohydrates and alters levels of hormones that affect our appetite. Ongoing sleep deprivation is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and stroke, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Scientists recently discovered that sleep and memory storage are inextricably linked as well. Recent findings suggest that sleep plays a housekeeping role that removes toxins in your brain that build up while you are awake. Sleep stimulates the glymphatic system, the brain’s waste-flushing system. This newly-discovered system scrubs away neural waste during sleep linked to the accumulation of toxins in the brain, researchers say.

Metabolic Enhancement for Neurodegeneration Stabilizes Cognitive Decline

A comprehensive therapeutic approach often used to treat patients with heart disease, cancer and neurological conditions was shown to partially reverse and stabilize cognitive decline in patients with early Alzheimer’s. MEND, which stands for Metabolic Enhancement for Neurodegeneration, calls for interventions, including dietary changes, stress reduction, hormone balance and integration of activities and vitamin supplements.

A research paper on MEND published in 2016 in the journal Aging was reportedly the first description of the reversal of cognitive decline in patients with early Alzheimer’s disease. The paper outlined a a two-year MEND pilot study of individuals with early Alzheimer’s and its precursors, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and subjective cognitive impairment (SCI) to test whether it could help participants improve cognitive function and memory. “The magnitude of the improvement is unprecedented, providing additional objective evidence that this programmatic approach to cognitive decline is highly effective,” the paper’s authors reported.

MEND is a 36-point individualized regimen of diet, exercise, brain stimulation, medication and vitamins, sleep improvements and other protocols. The MEND approach addresses inflammation and oxidative stress that can take a toll on overall health and brain health in particular.
