What is coronavirus and CoVid 19?

The virus is now known as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease it causes is called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Coronaviruses are an extremely common cause of colds and other upper respiratory infections. More than 200 types of viruses what we call a “cold,” but the most common one is the rhinovirus, which is thought to be responsible for at least 50% of colds. Other viruses that can cause colds include coronavirus, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza and parainfluenza.

SARS-CoV-2 = Name of virus

CoVid 19 = Name of disease caused by SARS-CoV-2

In most sites discussing this topic, the names are used interchangeably.

Most people who catch the CoVid 19 recover at home, and some need hospitalization to fight the virus. In roughly 3-4% of people COVID-19 is deadly. Medical authorities aren’t sure of the fatality rate of the coronavirus, because they’re not certain how many people have become infected with the disease. But they do have some estimates, and there is a widespread consensus that COVID-19 is most dangerous for elderly patients and those with preexisting health burdens. The virus causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever and in more severe cases, pneumonia. The main cause of disease and death is called severe acute respiratory syndrome for which the SARS virus got its name.
